Sensitivity of Sediment Magnetic Records to Climate Change during Holocene for the Northern South China Sea

چکیده
Magnetic property has been proved to be a sensitive proxy to climate change for both terrestrial and marine sediments. Based on the schedule frame established by AMS 14C dating of foraminifera, detail magnetic analyses were performed for core PC24 sediments at sampling intervals of 2 cm to discuss magnetic sensitivity of marine sediment to climate during Holocene for the northern South China Sea. The results indicated that: (1) Concentration dependent magnetic parameters are positive corresponding to variation of temperature. The frequency dependent susceptibility coefficient basically reflected the variation in humidity; (2) χARM/SIRM was more sensitive to detrital magnetite particles and SIRM/χ was more effective to bioge χARM/SIRM and SIRM/χ are corresponding to precipitation and temperature, respectively; (3) the Holocene Megathermal in the study area was identified as 7.5–3.4 cal. ka BP. The warmest stage of Holocene for the study area should be during 6.1–3.9 cal. ka BP; (4) The 8 ka cold event was characterized as cold and dry during 8.55–8.25 cal. ka BP; (5) During early and middle Holocene, the climate combinations were warm dry and cold wet. It turned to warm and wet after 2.7 cal. ka BP.

Holocene Climate and Climate Variability of the Northern Gulf of Mexico and Adjacent Northern Gulf Coast: A Review
Marine records from the northern Gulf of Mexico indicate that significant multidecadaland century-scale variability was common during the Holocene. Mean annual sea-surface temperature (SST) during the last 1,400 years may have varied by 3C, and excursions to cold SST coincide with reductions in solar output. Broad trends in Holocene terrestrial climate and environmental change along the eastern...
متن کاملEast Asian monsoon climate during the Late Pleistocene: high-resolution sediment records from the South China Sea
Based on the study of 10 sediment cores and 40 core-top samples from the South China Sea (SCS) we obtained proxy records of past changes in East Asian monsoon climate on millennial to bidecadal time scales over the last 220,000 years. Climate proxies such as global sea level, estimates of paleotemperature, salinity, and nutrients in surface water, ventilation of deep water, paleowind strength, ...
متن کاملProglacial lake sediment records of Holocene climate change in the western Cordillera of Peru
Sediment records from proglacial lakes between 9 and 10 S in the western Cordillera of the Peruvian Andes document the waxing and waning of alpine glaciers since the end of the Lateglacial stage. These records from the southern tropical Andes provide supporting evidence that the early Holocene (between 12 and 8 ka) was relatively warm and dry, and the middle Holocene (between 8 and 4 ka) was ma...
متن کاملEvaluating Holocene climate change in northern Norway using sediment records from two contrasting lake systems
We analyzed Holocene sedimentary records from two lakes in the Lofoten Islands, northern Norway to evaluate environmental changes during the Holocene related to northern North Atlantic climate dynamics. The lakes are located in different geomorphological settings, and thus provide a contrast in their response to regional climate change. Environmental changes at both lakes were interpreted based...
متن کاملThe role of changes in the large-scale atmospheric systems in the evolution of the late Pleistocene and Holocene climate of the Zagros Mountains
1-Introduction The Zagros Mountains range with a northwest-southeast direction covers a large part of western Iran. This range acts as a barrier against mid-latitude westerly airflows and thereby generates significant orographic rainfalls, resulting in a hospitable environment which has been home to ancient civilizations. Major variations in the westerlies can lead to significant environ...
